MacMillan River Adventures Location

MacMillan River Adventures’ Yukon Outfitter Concession #8 is situated in the MacMillan River watershed, offering prime moose habitat. The mix of dense timber, abundant water sources, and high-elevation mountains creates ideal conditions for a thriving moose population. The region supports some of the highest moose densities in the Yukon, increasing the chances of encountering mature bulls.

With numerous lakes and rivers, the concession allows for multiple strategically placed boat camps. This setup helps distribute hunting pressure evenly, preventing overharvesting while ensuring hunters experience a more private, unpressured hunt.

Travel to the Yukon

Hunters can reach Whitehorse, Yukon, (Airport Code YXY) in a single day with commercial flights connecting through Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton on Air Canada, Air North, and WestJet. It’s recommended to arrive in Whitehorse two days before your charter flight to account for travel delays and lost luggage.

From Whitehorse we will travel to Faro where the adventure begins. In Faro we will finish up the last minute paperwork, and board the float plane!

If you are bringing a rifle (centerfire or muzzleloader) you must complete a Canadian Firearms Declaration Form 5589 before or upon arrival at Customs. This form is not required for archery equipment. Hunters Should also complete the U.S. Department of Homeland Securities Form 4457. This is a certificate of registration for personal effects taken abroad. Personal effects would include your rifle & scope or other expensive items that have serial numbers. THIS FORM IS NOT REQUIRED, BUT MAY MAKE REENTRY TO THE U.S. CONSIDERABLY EASIER.

Float Planes

Traveling by float plane is a key part of accessing the remote hunting areas in the Yukon. These flights provide direct transportation to backcountry camps, allowing hunters to reach prime locations that are otherwise inaccessible. Float planes typically depart from Faro, YT, flying over breathtaking landscapes of mountains, rivers, and lakes before landing on secluded waterways near the hunting grounds. This method of travel minimizes the need for long overland treks, making it an efficient way to enter the wilderness while preserving the natural environment. Hunters should be prepared for approximately a 75-pound weight limit on gear and luggage, as float planes have limited capacity. Upon landing, our guides will be ready to assist with unloading gear and getting you settled into camp.

census results

The survey aimed to estimate the moose population’s abundance, distribution, and composition in the Lower MacMillan River area. Moose were observed in about 34% of survey blocks, with 1,134 counted, including mature bulls, cows, yearlings, and calves. The highest moose densities were found in hilly terrain with past burns (16-31 years old) and subalpine willow habitats, while fewer moose were seen in forested lowlands. This data helps guide conservation and hunting management efforts.

Population Estimate / Density

The estimated moose population in the Upper Klondike Highway MMU is 1,893, with a density of 253 moose per 1,000 km², placing it at the high end of Yukon’s typical range. Estimated 37 calves and 21 yearlings per 100 adult cows, compared to Yukon’s typical 29 calves and 18 yearlings. The adult bull-to-cow ratio stands at 56 bulls per 100 adult cows, slightly below the Yukon average but well above the conservation minimum of 30 bulls per 100 cows. These numbers indicate a strong population structure, supporting both natural sustainability and responsible harvest management.
