What experience level do I need for a Yukon moose hunt with MacMillan River Adventures?

Our hunts accommodate both first-time hunters and experienced outdoorsmen. No prior moose hunting experience is required, though basic firearms proficiency is expected. Our guides provide instruction on moose behavior, calling techniques, and field care. Physical fitness is important—you should be able to walk 3-5 miles per day over uneven terrain and assist with field dressing and quartering a 1,000+ pound animal.

What is your moose hunt success rate?

Success rates vary by season and hunting method, but our boat-based moose hunts during the September rut typically see 70-85% success rates on mature bulls. Our 4,000-square-mile concession in the Lower MacMillan River area supports a moose density of 253 moose per 1,000 km²—at the high end of Yukon's typical range—with an adult bull-to-cow ratio of 56 bulls per 100 adult cows. This population data comes from the 2020 Yukon Fish and Wildlife Branch moose census.

What's included in the hunt price?

Your hunt includes: float plane charter flights from Faro to camp and return, all meals while in the field (breakfast, lunch, dinner), comfortable cabin lodging with heat, generator or solar power, and showers at most locations, professional guide services (1:1 or 2:1 hunter-to-guide ratio depending on hunt package), field care and transport of meat, hide, and antlers from kill site to camp, transport of trophy and meat from camp back to Faro, and Yukon hunting tags and fishing license. Not included: commercial flights to/from Whitehorse, accommodations and meals in Whitehorse before and after your hunt, taxidermy services, gratuities for guides, and personal gear.

When is the best time to hunt moose in the Yukon?

Our moose hunts run from early September through early October, coinciding with the rut. The prime calling period typically occurs mid-September when bulls are most responsive to cow calls and grunt calls. Early September offers warmer weather and active pre-rut behavior, while late September through early October features peak rutting activity with mature bulls actively seeking cows. We recommend arriving two days early in Whitehorse to account for potential travel delays.

Do I need any special permits to bring my rifle into Canada?

Yes. If you're bringing a centerfire rifle or muzzleloader, you must complete a Canadian Firearms Declaration Form 5589 before or upon arrival at Customs. This form is not required for archery equipment. We also recommend completing U.S. Department of Homeland Security Form 4457 (Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects Taken Abroad) for your rifle, scope, and other expensive items with serial numbers. While Form 4457 is not required, it significantly simplifies re-entry to the United States.

What is MacMillan River Adventures' hunting record?

Can I combine a moose hunt with other species?

Yes. Our concession supports grizzly bear, black bear, caribou, and wolf. Many hunters add a wolf or bear tag to their moose hunt. Combination hunts allow you to pursue additional species during downtime or after harvesting your moose, maximizing your time in the Yukon wilderness.

What are the cabin accommodations like?

Our 2- to 4-person wood cabins feature generator or solar power, showers, heated interiors, foam mattresses on wooden-framed beds, and Starlink internet at select locations. After a day hunting, you'll return to a dry, warm cabin with hot meals prepared by your guide. For hunters pursuing remote areas, we may establish temporary spike camps—these backcountry camps provide shelter and essentials but lack showers and permanent structures.

What should I do if my luggage is delayed or lost?

This is why we strongly recommend arriving in Whitehorse at least two days before your scheduled charter flight to camp. If your luggage containing hunting gear is delayed, you'll have time to work with the airline to locate it or purchase replacement items in Whitehorse. Once you fly into our remote camps, resupply is not possible until your return flight.

What does the hunt price include?

Your hunt includes: bush plane flights to/from our remote cabins, all meals while in the field, heated cabin lodging with showers and power, hunting tags and fishing license, expert guide services, and transport of your meat/hide/antlers to Faro after a successful harvest. You're responsible for: commercial flights to/from Whitehorse, lodging and meals in Whitehorse before/after the hunt, your non-resident Yukon hunting license, and any taxidermy/shipping costs.

What is your moose hunting success rate?

We focus on mature trophy bulls, not just filling tags. Hunters should expect opportunities at bulls over 50 inches, with many exceeding 60 inches. We hold the Pope & Young #1 world record for Alaska/Yukon moose. In September of 2024 I was on a plane heading to Whitehorse, Yukon for what would be a memorable hunt of a lifetime. Upon arrival in Whitehorse, I spoke with Matt from MacMillian who was very accommodating. Before I knew it I was on a float plane headed to camp. Unsure of what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised to find a new cabin, HOT shower and WiFi. My guide was experienced and ready to hunt! Every day of my hunt we saw moose and other wildlife. I witnessed rutting bulls, cows with calves and was fortunate enough to harvest a mature bull on my 4th day after passing one up the first day. But, my hunt wasn’t over yet! I told my guide I was after a wolf or a grizzly and he helped make it happen. We hunted three more days and I harvested a 110 lb. grey wolf! Talk about an adrenaline rush! Hearing wolves howling and growling at 100 yards was an unforgettable experience. I would recommend Macmillan River Adventures to anyone looking for a Yukon hunting experience, You won’t regret it.

Over the last three years, I’ve had the opportunity to guide seven moose hunts with McMillan River Adventures. Each season brought its own adventure, and it’s been one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The terrain out there is something else - huge, wild, and untouched. We spent our days traveling through some of the most remote parts of the Yukon, and it never got old. The fishing was incredible too, grayling in the Tay River, northern pike hiding in just about every bay, and Kalzas Lake was loaded with monster pike and lake trout. I’ll never forget seeing a few big grizzlies right on the lake’s edge. We were lucky enough to tag out on most hunts I guided. There were lots of moose around, but we always held out for the big ones, mature bulls with antlers carrying world-class mass, often over 60 inches wide. One season, I even got to help build a brand-new outpost, which was a great experience on its own. Being out there, part of the land and the work that goes into it, it’s something I’ll always appreciate. The folks at McMillan River Adventures genuinely care about what they do, and it shows. What species can I hunt with MacMillan River Adventures?

We offer fully guided hunts for Alaska-Yukon moose, grizzly bear (spring and fall), black bear, mountain caribou, wolf, and stone sheep. Moose hunts run early September through early October during the rut. Grizzly hunts are available in spring (May) and fall. Wolf hunts run in winter (February). Caribou and black bear can often be added as combo species.

How do I get to your hunting camps?

Hunters fly commercially into Whitehorse, Yukon’s capital. We recommend arriving at least 2 days before your hunt start date to allow for travel delays. From Whitehorse, you’ll either drive to our base or take a bush plane directly into camp, depending on which camp you’re hunting from. We handle all logistics once you arrive in Whitehorse.

What are the accommodations like?

Our river and lake-based hunts operate from 2- to 4-person wood cabins equipped with generator or solar power, hot showers, foam mattresses on wooden-framed beds, and Starlink internet at select locations. You return to the cabin each evening after hunting. For remote backcountry hunts (stone sheep, some caribou), we may use temporary spike camps, these are more rugged with no showers but provide access to prime hunting areas.

How physically demanding are your hunts?

It varies by hunt type and species. Boat-based moose and bear hunts involve moderate hiking and calling from shorelines, suitable for hunters in average physical condition. Horseback moose hunts cover more ground but horses carry gear. Stone sheep hunts are the most demanding, requiring excellent fitness for multi-day backpack hunts in alpine terrain. Caribou hunts involve spot-and-stalk in varied terrain. Contact us to discuss your fitness level and we’ll recommend the right hunt.

Can I hunt multiple species on one trip?

Yes. Caribou, black bear, and wolf can often be added to moose or grizzly hunts on a trophy fee basis, you only pay the additional fee if you harvest the animal. This is common in the Yukon and maximizes your opportunities. Discuss combo options when booking so we can plan logistics and ensure you have the right tags.

When should I book my hunt?

Prime dates fill 12-18 months in advance, especially for fall moose during the rut. We recommend booking as early as possible. A 50% deposit reserves your dates. Spring grizzly and winter wolf hunts sometimes have more availability, but don’t wait serious hunters book early.

What weapons are legal in the Yukon?

Rifles and archery equipment are legal. Handguns are illegal in Canada, do not bring them. Crossbows are not permitted in the Yukon. Hunter orange is not required when rifle or archery hunting in the Yukon. We can provide detailed gear lists and weapon recommendations after booking.
