All of the rams harvested in the MacMillan River outfitting area are registerable as Stone’s sheep and some as Fannin. Body color varies from dark chocolate to a light grey with many of the brown or grey saddle back coloration patterns.
We operate on a very strict self-imposed sheep quota in our area. In doing so we are able to offer a 14 day sheep hunt and keep success rate and ram quality high. With the 14 day hunt opportunity you can have a few weather days and even a day of rest if necessary and still ensure plenty of time on the mountain to harvest that ram.
Our maximum elevation is 7000′ and treeline is around 4500′ so these are not high elevation hunts. Similar to Bighorn sheep our Stone’s sheep spend as much time in the brushy and timbered areas as they do on the open slopes. This hunt is as much a test of patience as it is endurance. Often a lot of glassing time is required to locate these sheep hid out in the rocks and brushy areas at these lower elevations.
Our Stone’s sheep horseback hunts are all offered as combo hunts. Hunters will be carrying licensing and seals for other species including Alaska/Yukon moose, mountain caribou, grizzly and black bear and wolf and wolverine. The later hunt date in August is the best option for the combo hunt as the antlered game will be hard horned if the velvet hasn’t been removed by the bulls yet.
Both of our Yukon stone sheep hunting trips are 14 days with 12 full days of hunting, and offer great opportunities for hunting other species.
